The Institute of Development Studies

The Institute of Development Studies, in the United Kingdom, is one of the world's leading organisations for research and advisory work and teaching training sharing on international development. The Institute works with a network of global partners to generate cutting edge knowledge as a basis for bringing alternative ideas and fresh solutions to the real world challenges of development policy and practice. Research at IDS is multidisciplinary, grouped around five key themes - governance, participation, competing in the global economy, governing science and technology, and managing risk and vulnerability.

The Globalisation Team at IDS has conducted extensive research on trends in global trade. It has researched the impact of standards on EU trade, including work on non-tariff barriers for the export of meat from southern Africa and horticultural products from eastern and southern Africa.

International relevant project experience includes:

• Research on the impact of EU public and private standards on horticultural and aquaculture production and exports in East Africa and South-East Asia: "Agricultural value chains and standards in developing countries", Rockefeller Foundation.
• Research on Kenyan horticultural exports and UK supermarkets: Department for International Development, UK.
