The University of Otago was New Zealand's first University, founded in 1869. The University has earned an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching and currently has over 20,000 enrolled students. In 2007, the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission carried out an assessment for the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF), covering the period 2001-2006. This involved assessing the importance of the research carried out by all New Zealand universities. The University of Otago was rated New Zealand's leading university in this exercise.
In the PBRF exercise, mentioned above, the Department of Economics at the University of Otago outscored all other economics departments in New Zealand. Since 2006, the Department of Economics has hosted the Otago Workshop in International Trade Economics. The Workshop has attracted a number of distinguished trade economists including David Greenaway (University of Nottingham), James Markusen (University of Colorado) and Peter Neary (University of Oxford). International Economics is an area of designated research strength at the Department.
