CIRAD is a semi public French R&D institute, oriented to international cooperation, employing 1 800 persons (1/3 outside of France) with headquarters in Montpellier, France. The ES department includes several research units (UR) that relate to international trade policy, supply chain competitiveness, impact assessment etc.  The UMR MOISA (Markets, Organisation, Institutions and Strategies) research team investigates the conditions for sustainable development of agrifood systems in emergent and developing countries. The contemporary evolution of consumer preferences towards food quality and safety has caused a subsequent restructuring of marketing channels in developing countries (alternative marketing channels feeding the cities, peri-urban agriculture, supermarket development, the role of intermediation, etc.) and modified trade relationships between importing and exporting countries. From a producer's point of view, it is important to assess the impacts of this restructuring process in terms of necessary investments in fixed capital, human capital and technology adoption, agricultural income level and income diversification. Ultimately, the team analyses the consequences of these evolutions for supply chains in developing countries (vertical integration, exclusion, etc.). The CIRAD-ES department can rely on a long and successful experience managing and contributing to many EC co-funded international research projects.

Coordination experience in recent intercontinental EC RTD projects

  • EC FP6-CT-SSA ALCUEFOOD, a bi-regional platform on FQ&S themes, which includes "impacts from public and private norms on LDC export supply chains" (2005-08).
  • EC FP6-CT-SSP EUMERCOPOL a policy research project that works on trade policy impacts, agri-sector relative competitiveness, data-base constructions and policy comparisons. NTM-Impact project directly benefits from the latter 2 projects, regarding: supply chain information from Argentina and Brazil, and some of the collected policy information from these countries and the EU (2005-08).
